Beneath the Mask

Kaminari Knight (Japanese: カミナリ・ナイト) is the musician alias of Michael Holmes, a composer, producer and DJ from Perth, Western Australia who currently lives in Japan.



A Brief History

Michael was born in Perth on the 12th of August, 1993 and grew up in the country near Albany, in southern WA.



During his high school years, he learned percussion and was involved in many school related musical activities including the school band as well as rock bands.



It was in the end of 2009, not long before his final year at high school when he began to discover his true talent in musical composition. It was upon the discovery of Karsh Kale and the introduction to the music production software Reason which led him to discover his true musical home: Electronic Music. During free time or procrastination from homework, he quite often experimented with various musical ideas in Reason. Furthermore, Holmes has always had the desire to create his own original art rather than being constrained to performing existing works by others.



In 2011, Holmes returned to Perth to further his compositional techniques at the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts (WAAPA) where he met other musicians such as Daniel Symons (D-Jeong), Laura Lowther (Kucka), Jake Steele (Yarhkob, Kucka, Injured Ninja), and Bob White (The Boost Hero Man), just to name a few. He had started his journey through EDM as somewhat of a nomad, having had sparse knowledge of and exposure to the genre. He conceived the pseudonym 'Kaminari Knight' in 2012. Since embarking on studies at WAAPA, he has been establishing and refining his musical style and continues to do so to this day. Holmes graduated from University in 2014 with a Bachelor Degree in Composition and Music Technology.

He has since relocated to Japan and released music under his own label, Prismatic Feather Media.

Kaminari Knight normally produces blazing, turbocharged Drum & Bass, Dubstep, Hardcore Rave and other electronic music, but sometimes he may produce something completely different altogether. Being passionate about musical originality, he always strives to find ways to differentiate his music from mainstream Electronic Dance Music.

 

Kaminari Knight's influences include Karsh Kale, Sound Avtar, Robert Miles, Aphex Twin, Venetian Snares, DJ Shimamura and Camellia.
